MetroNorth Station For Co-op City...

Metro-North Expansion Plan Would Cut Commute Times For Co-Op City Residents

CO-OP CITY — For residents who live in Co-op City, getting to Manhattan without a car can be a trek.

"I don't really go to the city," said 61-year-old Valerie Pagan, a resident at the sprawling Bronx housing complex for the last two decades. "It's a long way. It takes a long time."

But an MTA plan to expand Metro-North rail service to four neighborhoods in the East Bronx — including Co-op City, home to some 50,000 residents — would provide a direct connection into Penn Station and to Westchester, and greatly shorten commute times, officials say.

The MTA has been hosting information sessions for the last several weeks to get community feedback on the plan, which would eventually create a new train line on existing Amtrak railroad tracks that runs from Penn Station through the East Bronx into Westchester and Connecticut. Train stations are being proposed for locations in Hunts Point, Parkchester, Morris Park and Co-op City.

Hundreds of residents turned out fort the community forum in Co-op City last week. Kenneth Kearns, district manager for Bronx Community Board 10, said the new rail line would cut commute times for many residents in half.

"Right now if you're in Co-op City and you want to go to Manhattan, it’s a time-consuming process," he said. "It'll make life a lot easier for people."

Commuting from Baychester to Midtown takes an hour, and for most residents means taking a bus to the No. 6 train at the Pelham Bay Park station, Kearns said. And the express BxM7 bus, the quickest route, is often packed during rush hours.

"It's hard to get to other places," said Co-op City resident Richie Vasquez, 26, who moved here from Buffalo last year. "You either need a car or you have to wait for a bus."

We can tell many stories and give you many updates, but this one here touches home for Andy King and The King Team Family. Andy King has made several rounds in his community informing residents on things that are happening in the 12th District as well as in City Council, plus asking for their support to elect him as their next City Councilman to represent the people in 12th District of the Bronx.

In the meeting with the Gunther Ave Block Association, Mr. King speaks of being born and raised, all his life, in the 12th District and attending the local schools; he has never left his community. Mr. King shared what he has been doing and wants to continue to do for this community, the Northeast section of the Bronx.

While speaking to the members of the association, one member had a feeling of joy to see someone from her past doing good for themselves and who became a person who our children can learn from and look up to, Mr. Andy King. Mr. King had no idea that his 3rd grade teacher was part of the Gunther Ave Block Association or that he would end up in the same room as her over 30 years later.

The reunion was a tear-jerker for all, but for the two, it was really memorable and emotional. Mr. King said, "You can only dream of things like this; being reunited with someone who played a key part in your childhood, and it could only be God that moves you and leads you in this life... GOD IS GOOD, ALL THE TIME!"

Andy King Supports Breast Cancer Awareness...

Being a husband and a health care organizer Andy King knows the importance of early detection for women. He supports the National Breast Cancer Foundation and the work that they are doing. Mr. King says it's our duty to play our part because we all have women in our lives that we love dearly. So take the time to spread the word about early detection, and play your part to help the fight against Breast Cancer.

Early Detection Plan:

An Early Detection Plan enables you to be proactive about your health by reminding you to do monthly breast self-exams and schedule clinical breast exams and mammograms.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. We have made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go and need your help!

The National Breast Cancer Foundation's mission is to save lives through early detection and to provide mammograms for those in need. Our mission includes increasing awareness through education, providing diagnostic breast care services for those in need, and providing nurturing support services.
